COVENANT OF PEACE

We, government leaders, civil society, Muslim and Christian religious leaders, Maranao and indigenous peoples’ traditional leaders and multi-sectoral representatives from the provinces of Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte and the cities of Iligan and Marawi,  believing in one God and one nation, do hereby declare that:

We uphold, promote and adhere the fundamental rights of peoples as enshrined in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, United Declaration for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), and International Humanitarian Laws duly affirmed by the Philippine Constitution of 1987, Local Government Code and other related national laws;

We advocate sustainable peace and development anchored on the continuing dialogues of life and faith among and between Muslims, Christians and the indigenous peoples;

We believe that peace is fundamental to achieve our envisioned multi-ethnic and multi-religious communities that are working harmoniously and interdependently for sustained economic prosperity and for rebuilding of mutual trust and better relationships;

We condemn the heartless attack on civilian communities in Lanao del Norte and the resulting displacement of innocent civilians; renounce war as a national policy; support the full enforcement of the peace policy of government; but ask authorities to accord justice  for the victims and punish the perpetrators according to law;

We commit ourselves to be in solidarity with each other to support the displaced communities through the local government units’ calamity funds; help rebuild ruin communities and relationship to mitigate the ill-effects of historic biases and prejudices; and seek expert help of experts and groups/institutions for more relief to evacuees and psychosocial interventions as part of disaster management;

We further commit ourselves to mutually protect the civilian communities in times of adversities.

As symbolic manifestation of our quest and commitment for peace, we hereby affix our signatures today, August 30, 2008 at the  Maria Cristina Hotel, Iligan City.
